"Tampere is more than just a city; it’s a modern and welcoming community brimming with diversity and opportunity. It is a place where you will easily find a sense of belonging.! I feel blessed to have the opportunity to live and raise my family here."

Tell us briefly about your journey to Tampere and how you ended up here?

My journey to Tampere began in 2020 when my wife and I embarked on our educational pursuits in Finland. We were fortunate to secure study places in various cities but couldn’t study in the same location. After considering our interests and aspirations, I enrolled in the Master of Theology in Social Exclusion at Åbo Akademi University in Turku, while my wife pursued her Master of Arts in Teacher Education at Tampere University. Given our circumstances and the prevailing pandemic then, we settled in Tampere, a choice that made strategic sense as it allowed for easier travel and employment prospects. Three years later, having both graduated, we find ourselves deeply enamored with this city.

What do you love most about living in Tampere?

Living in Tampere strikes the perfect balance between urban convenience and natural beauty. As someone who’s lived in various cities abroad, I appreciate its unique charm. It’s not overwhelming like some larger cities, nor is it too remote or lacking in activity. What I love most is its closeness to nature–surrounded by forests, lakes, and parks. As a family with young children, this proximity to nature is invaluable. We have endless opportunities for outdoor adventures, from leisurely walks in the woods to picnics by the lakeside. The chance to immerse ourselves in the beauty of the outdoors is not just recreational; it’s rejuvenating for the soul. Moreover, Tampere boasts a vibrant community and an array of family-friendly activities and programs. Whether it’s cultural events, recreational or educational facilities, there’s always something exciting happening in the city. This combination of urban amenities and natural wonders makes Tampere an ideal place to live and raise a family. Indeed, we are proud to call Tampere our home away from home.

Why would you encourage international talents to move to Tampere?

Encouraging international talents to move to Tampere is an easy task, given its burgeoning reputation as a dynamic hub for education, business, and technological innovation. Continuously ranked among Finland’s most livable cities, Tampere recently secured the top spot in a 2024 survey as the country’s most attractive city. What makes Tampere particularly appealing is its robust support infrastructure, which provides a seamless transition for newcomers. With ample opportunities for living, working, and studying, Tampere offers a promising environment for international talents to thrive personally and professionally.

What is your favorite place, and your favorite thing to do in Tampere?

My favorite place in Tampere is its nature and outdoor spaces. There’s an abundance of free outdoor activities that my family and I adore. During summer, we enjoy camping, grilling, and swimming at Kaukajärvi and Hervantajärvi. We also enjoy picking blueberries and strawberries in the forest. Since moving to Finland, one cherished tradition is celebrating Midsummer, or Juhannus in Finnish, where we pitch our tent in Härmälä. In autumn, we enjoy mushroom picking, especially in Rauhaniemi. It is one of the best ways to unwind and connect with nature. Additionally, the Näsinneula Tower holds a special place in our hearts, offering breathtaking views of Tampere’s landscapes. It is our happy place in any season!

How would you describe Tampere as a city, what makes it special?

Tampere is more than just a city; it’s a modern and welcoming community brimming with diversity and opportunity. As a foreigner, you will not feel isolated because many internationals live here. It is a place where you will easily find a sense of belonging. Also, daycares are nearby homes, and their staff is very friendly. And the best thing is—there are playgrounds everywhere! I feel blessed to have the opportunity to live and raise my family here.

Is there anything else you would like to share with potential newcomers that make Tampere a great place to live and work?

Tampere is a city that values sustainability, and I am amazed by the people’s attention to circular economy and recycling. When my family and I came here from the Philippines, we got free furniture for our new home. The people are very generous and kind; they are ready to help when needed. I think this makes Tampere truly a great place to be.
