References of contact infection in Pyynikki stomach flu outbreak
Based on the reports received by the authorities, the outbreak of stomach flu in the Pyynikki area appears to have been spread by contact and there are no indications of food or waterborne transmission. Only a few new cases have been reported. The causes of the outbreak are still being investigated, and the survey of stomach flu cases is open until 9 May 2025.
The figures are based on reports from residents in the area and reflect the scale and course of the epidemic.
Investigations into the stomach flu outbreak in the Pyynikki area have shown indications that the epidemic has spread by contact. The causes of the outbreak are still being investigated and so far more than 500 people have responded to the stomach flu survey. Examinations of those affected have revealed the presence of norovirus, and no serious infections are known to have occurred.
– The authorities suspect that the disease has spread by contact. There are no epidemiological indications that the stomach flu originated from water or food, says Merja Bojang, chair of the outbreak investigation team.
Next, the authorities will analyse the responses to the stomach flu survey. The survey, which aims to identify the source of the illness, is open until 9 May 2025.
The epidemic has calmed down
The number of cases has clearly decreased. The epidemic peaked between 27 and 28 April 2025, after which there have been only few new cases.
– Good hand hygiene is still important, and it is a good idea to avoid going out in public places during the symptoms, says Sirpa Räsänen, epidemiologist of the Pirkanmaa Welfare Region.
Tampere City Environmental Health and Pirha's Communicable Disease Control are continuing to investigate the cause of the stomach flu outbreak in cooperation with health protection, food and health authorities.
