Academic year begins at The Adult Education Centre – Korean cooking, ceramics and fitness ballet among the most popular courses

The Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region is offering more than 960 courses this autumn, with 443 of them starting during the first week of September. Some courses run throughout the academic year, while others last for a single term or even just one day.

Approximately 14,400 students have already enrolled for the autumn term. At the same point in 2025, the figure stood at 14,600, even though there were 179 more courses available than this year.

– We are pleased to see how many people have found something meaningful to do or something new to learn in our programme. Although the Adult Education Centre has had to increase course fees and reduce the number of courses offered, we have succeeded in reaching more people relative to the size of our programme than before, says Communications Specialist Anna-Katariina Maksimoff.

Based on waiting lists, ceramics remains the most sought-after subject this autumn. Despite an increase in capacity following the completion of new ceramics facilities at the Nekala Cultural Centre in August, 92 people are still waiting for a place on a ceramics course. The Adult Education Centre can now provide ceramics instruction for a total of 300 students at Sampola, Nekala and Kauraslampi School in Ylöjärvi.

Other courses attracting long waiting lists include fitness ballet, garment sewing, Pilates and woodworking. Among food-related courses, easy Korean home cooking has emerged as a clear favourite, with 21 people currently on the waiting list. Students have also shown strong interest in genealogy, artificial intelligence, the free Budgeting Clinic and the Divorce Seminar. While the most popular courses fill up quickly, more than 580 courses still have places available.

As the academic year begins, the Student Association of the Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region will be available at Sampola for two weeks to help students find their way around. By mid-September, 330 courses will have started at Sampola alone, and the autumn season also brings the return of free public lectures in the auditorium. The season opens with the first lecture in the Great Rivers of the World series on Thursday, 3 September 2026.

Kaisa Helenius, Chair of the Student Association’s Board, is looking forward to the start of the academic year, which always brings new students and new courses. One of the association’s key goals is to strengthen the sense of community within the Adult Education Centre.

– Students are welcome to ask us practical questions, such as how to find the right classroom, or simply stop by our information desk in the lobby to say hello. We are also happy to tell people about the Student Association’s activities and Kesäpirtti, the association’s summer retreat, Helenius says.
