Pre-school education is an important period in a child's life. It gives children the chance to get excited, experiment and learn new things. It is the responsibility of the child's guardian to ensure that the child participates in pre-primary education or other activities that achieve the pre-primary education objectives, one year before the start of compulsory education. (Basic Education Act)

Pre-primary education supports the child's learning, inclusion, development and growth. It strengthens the child's self-esteem and provides opportunities for rich interaction with other children of the same age.

The registration period for pre-primary education (prechool) students’ native language lessons for the school year 2026–2027 is on 30.3.- 19.4.2026. After this, registrations can no longer be accepted.

Pre-primary education is provided for one year prior to the onset of compulsory basic education, i.e. the year when a child becomes seven years old. Pre-primary education is also compulsory (Basic Education Act, Section 26 s). Municipally provided re-primary education is organized a minimum of 700 hours a year or approximately four hours a day. The school year is generally identical to the school dates and holidays observed in basic education. 

Pre-primary education is provided free of charge. Any supplementary activities in addition to pre-primary education, however, are provided for a fee.
