General upper secondary education for immigrants and multilingual people

Immigrants and multilingual young people can apply to all six general upper secondary schools in Tampere upper secondary education, if the selection criteria are met. Adults can apply to Tampere Upper Secondary School for Adults either by registering as a subject or degree student.

In Tampere, it is also possible to study in Finnish and English at Pyynikin lukio Upper Secondary School. Pyynikin lukio Upper Secondary School also offers preparatory Finnish language studies, and there is a TUVA training group organised by Tredu in connection with the upper secondary school. In TUVA you can complete a wide range of preparatory studies for upper secondary school as well as upper secondary school study units according to an individual study plan. At Tampereen lyseon lukio Upper Secondary School, you can complete the International Baccalaureate (IB) line.

It is possible to study Finnish as a second language (S2) study units in all general upper secondary schools.

You can apply to general upper secondary school with a primary and lower secondary education certificate or an equivalent certificate. An applicant who has sufficient prerequisites for completing general upper secondary school studies may also be admitted to an upper secondary school, even if they do not have a primary and lower secondary education certificate or an equivalent certificate. If the applicant does not have a primary and lower secondary education certificate issued in Finland, they can participate in a discretionary application process, and the general upper secondary school will assess your proficiency to complete your upper secondary school studies. In addition, some upper secondary schools may have entrance exams or other selection procedures, such as interviews.

If a young person applies to general upper secondary school through a discretionary application process and their native language is not Finnish or Swedish, they will be invited to take a Finnish language proficiency test. Students starting upper secondary school are required to have sufficient Finnish language skills in all areas of language proficiency. In addition to language proficiency, upper secondary school studies also require other skills for completing compulsory subjects, such as mathematics and foreign languages.

Applications to general upper secondary schools are mainly submitted through the joint application process in the spring. All pupils graduating from comprehensive school and other eligible students participate in the joint application process. The application form is filled in electronically in the Studyinfo (Opintopolku) service.

You can also apply to general upper secondary school outside the joint application period. Best way to do this is to contact the general upper secondary school or the development manager of general upper secondary education directly.

Upper secondary school studies in Finland offer immigrants an excellent opportunity to receive a high-quality education, develop their Finnish language skills and prepare for future challenges.
