Lighting of public areas

Energy-efficient and sustainable lighting solutions are used to create a pleasant and safe urban environment. Lighting for public areas includes streets, green areas, playgrounds, sport fields, outdoor recreation areas, and ski trails.

Design solutions

High-quality design work lays the foundation for lighting that meets its goals. Lighting design is part of land use planning and the design of streets and green areas. The implementation of outdoor lighting in the city of Tampere is guided by the Lighting Design Guidelines and Outdoor Lighting Policy (available only in Finnish).

Construction

Outdoor lighting is being constructed at various locations around the city. The main focus is on replacing old lights with LEDs and moving overhead lines underground. Outdoor lighting is also being constructed in connection with street renovations and in new planning areas. A cost-effective and continuous construction process and investments will ensure reliable service for years to come.

Asset management

Lighting is seen as a service that requires continuous development work to ensure proper maintainance. The City of Tampere's outdoor lighting network is managed in the network information and asset management system database.  The system tracks the number, locations, and features of outdoor lighting fixtures. It can also be used to guide design, construction, and maintenance, as well as to plan future measures and estimate costs. The city manages its lighting assets with a focus on sustainability throughout their life cycle.
