1918 Finnish Civil War route

Prisoners gathered at Central Square in 1918.

Many of Tampere’s geographical places and buildings have their own history when it comes to the year 1918. With a little imagination, this history can be sensed when walking through the locations of the civil war route.

The distance by foot is about 6.5 km and by bike about 7 km when you move from place 5 (fire station) to place 11 (Vapriikki) and continue in numerical order.

One of the most heated confrontations of the Finnish Civil War took place at Kalevankangas on Maundy Thursday 28.3.1918, when the whites attacked towards the reds defending the ridge.

Tammela School was a place where red crowds were accommodated.

When the Civil War started, Johannes School started to be equipped as a hospital to the reds and the first patients arrived there 25.2.1918.

When Tampere was in blockade, Johannes Church was functioning as a lodging space for refugees.

The Business College was functioning as a lodging space for the reds during the war.

Näsilinna palace was conquered by the whites on 3.4.1918.

During the city’s takeover, there were fights especially about the ownership of the theater building and the City Hall.

During the Civil War, this building housed offices and the militia station, as well as a hospital of the reds.

When the whites had proceeded downtown on the fourth of April, there were battles near the national bank and Tirkkonen House.

Starting from 1917, the students of the Technical Institute were actively involved in the civil guard and 80 students participated in the so-called Suinula trip, which took place when the war started.
