Exercise for children and families with children
The importance of physical activity for children's well-being
Motor development is an important part of a child's growth and overall development. Motor skills form the basis for all physical activities learned later in life, such as cycling, climbing, running, balancing, and ball games. That is why it is important to practice them both before and after the age of 7.
Motor skills are divided into balance, movement, and handling skills. Balance skills include standing upright, spinning, dodging, and rolling. Movement skills include walking, running, climbing, and jumping. Handling skills include throwing, catching, kicking, and bouncing. Motor skills are a good way to observe a child's movement and support their development. Skills develop through varied movement and many repetitions.
Perceptual-motor skills refer to how a child perceives their own body and its sides in relation to the surroundings, time, and force. Body awareness refers to the ability to recognise and name different parts of the body, recognise the contours and different sides of the body, and the ability to cross the midline of the body. Adequate perceptual-motor skills are the basis for learning motor skills.
An easy way to let your child practice their motor skills is to let them do things themselves. This way, children learn to understand their bodies and movements through trial and error. Experiences of success give children a sense of competence and increase their enjoyment of physical activity. When you exercise together, this joy is also shared together.
