Landscape fields and valued meadows

The open cultural landscapes of Tampere have changed dramatically in recent decades. The remaining open landscapes are an important part of the urban environment. Fields and meadows are important for amenity, recreation and biodiversity.

In the City of Tampere, about 7% of the area of green spaces subject to zoning is open green space. This corresponds to an area of almost 200 hectares. The sites are mainly open or semi-open fields and meadows, with associated wooded margins. In recent years, new meadows have been established in new green areas, which take several years to develop into multi-species meadows.

Maintenance of landscape fields and meadows 2015-2025 programme

The green service programme has provided an overview of the green spaces owned by the City of Tampere. It has enabled the open green spaces in the A maintenance category to be managed in a targeted and planned manner. The aim is to raise the level of management of meadows and fields, to increase the natural experience and recreational opportunities for residents and to raise awareness of the importance of open green spaces in the urban fabric.

By increasing the number of landscape fields and meadows, open green spaces will become more diverse. We will restore valuable overgrown areas back to open meadows. The restoration measures set out in the programme are approved each year in the annual plan and budget.
