Safety and accidents in early childhood education and preschool education

The task of early childhood education and care is to strengthen children's wellbeing and safety skills. The promotion of safety also includes systematic prevention and monitoring of accidents as well as the proper maintenance of premises and equipment.

Accident notification

In the event of an accident, the daycare centre employee will report the accident using an online form. The link to the form and more specific instructions for filing an accident report can be found in the City of Tampere intranet. The personnel representative with primary supervisory responsibility in the situation in which the accident occurred must fill in the report. A copy of the accident report will be printed out to the guardian.

The daycare centre must always fill in an accident report form when an accident has occurred, even if no immediate medical attention is required.

Illness in early childhood education and care and in pre-primary education

What to do when a child falls ill?

A sick child should be cared for at home. The guardian must immediately notify the child’s early education and care group or pre-primary education group that the child is sick. If the child becomes sick during the day at the ECEC centre or pre-primary education unit, the guardian must pick the child up and take them home.

Before returning to early education and care group or pre-primary education group, it is important to assess both the risk of infection and the child’s recovery. The child must have enough time to recover from the illness.

The risk of infection is usually highest at the onset of the illness. Therefore, a child should not be brought to ECEC or pre-primary education until he or she has recovered sufficiently. A child should stay home to recover if they have a fever or other clear symptoms of illness, or if their condition has clearly worsened and they are unable to participate in the normal activities of ECEC or pre-primary education.

To notify the ECEC centre or pre-primary education unit of an absence, please call or send a message to the child’s group’s phone number or send an eVaka message. If desired, the guardian may provide details about the nature of the illness. This information may be important for the ECEC centre’s or pre-primary education unit’s hygiene measures or for preventing the spread of infections. Diseases and parasites spread very easily among children.

A child can usually return to ECEC or pre-primary education when he or she has the energy to play, go outside, and participate in activities as usual.

For questions regarding a child's health, it is advisable to contact health care services.
