Construction sites affecting traffic in the city centre

Snowy Tampere spreads out. In the middle is the Nokia Arena and the criss-crossing roads, with lakes and blue skies in the background.

Tampere city centre is undergoing continuous development, and construction work is bringing changes to traffic and routes. The page "Construction sites affecting traffic in the city centre" lists the most significant construction sites in the city centre that have the major impact on everyday life.

Tramway to Pirkkala and Linnainmaa

The Pirkkala-Linnainmaa Alliance of Tampere Tramway constructs the new section of the Ratikka tramway and related street and traffic arrangements. The first phase will complete the sections from Sori Square to Partola and the Kauppi Campus to Ruotula. The traffic circle at the intersection of Hatanpään and Tampereen valtatie can be transformed back to a signal-controlled intersection in summer 2026. The final lane arrangements for the area will be completed in 2027, and the entire tramway by 2028.

Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass

The Itsenäisyydenkatu underpass and the Asematunneli tunnel running inside the railway station will be combined into a smooth travel terminal featuring, for example, a new tram stop. The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency’s Tampere Railway Station Development Project will be completed in 2031. The tram will run through the underpass throughout the construction period, but there will be alternative routes for pedestrians, cyclists, and motor vehicles in the area during construction.

Renovation of Puutarhakatu

Puutarhakatu will be renovated between the parks Vanhankirkonpuisto and Hämeenpuisto. The street will have a wider two-way cycle track on the northern edge, pavements on both sides and a one-way carriageway for motor vehicles. The renovation will be completed in 2026. The work areas restrict motor vehicle traffic on Puutarhakatu, but pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use the street throughout the renovation period.

Erkkilän silta bridge

The renovated bridge will have separate lanes for pedestrians, cyclists, and cars. The bridge will be raised, widened, and given a new look. Demolition work and the casting of the new bridge have already been completed at the construction site, and according to current information, the result will be ready for use in August 2026. The old blue arches have been taken to Näsisaari artificial island for storage and reuse.

Paasikivenkatu

The renovation of Paasikivenkatu is part of a broader development project covering the entire Särkänniemi area. A new main cycle route and walking route is being built on the street as well as the district heating line, storm drains and water supply network are being renovated.

Särkänsilta bridge

The new Särkänsilta bridge will connect the Särkänniemi area on the shore of Lake Näsijärvi more closely to the city centre and facilitate access to the entertainment area in the future, especially from the city centre and the shore routes in the direction of Ranta-Tampella. The new bridge will be open to pedestrians in 2026.
