The temporary bridge will be built downstream from the Keskiputous power plant, between Koskipuisto Park and Vanhakirjastonpuisto Park. The structure will be a 6 meters wide bridge with a steel frame and wooden deck, equipped with 1.2 meters high mesh railings.
To install the bridge piles, the Tammerkoski rapids will be drained starting at 7 am on Monday 15 June 2026 and will remain empty until Wednesday morning. During this time, the load-bearing piles will be installed on the riverbed. After the piling work, construction of the bridge’s support beams, deck and railings will continue while water flows normally in the rapids.
The materials used for the temporary bridge have been used in previous projects and are now being utilised in their third bridge construction project. The piles, beams and deck planks come directly from Mustanlahti harbour, where they served as a work bridge for the Särkänsilta bridge project. Previously, the same structures have also been used in the construction of the Hakaniemi bridge in Helsinki.
Piling on the dry riverbed will cause noise and temporary disturbance to the surrounding area for a few days.
The temporary bridge is planned to open for pedestrians and cyclists at the turn of June and July.
Valssipadonraitti part of a main cycling route
The temporary bridge is part of the Valssipadonraitti renewal project, in which the the route crossing Tammerkoski Rapids will be widened and redesigned into a clearer and smoother section of the regional main cycling route. In the street renovation, the route will be widened by two metres along the entire stretch between Rongankatu and Puutarhakatu. This will make it possible to provide separate lanes for pedestrians and cyclists.
During the construction period, Valssipadonraitti will be completely closed to pedestrians and cyclists. Crossing Tammerkoski Rapids will be possible via alternative routes using Hämeensilta Bridge and Satakunnansilta Bridge. The traffic arrangements introduced will remain in effect until 2028.
