Teaching in the pupil's native language

The objective of instruction in the pupil’s native language in complement to basic education is to

  • achieve diverse, functional ability in languages
  • arouse the pupil’s interest in their own language
  • strengthening the pupil’s self-esteem and identity

Registration for classes in native language can make pupils

  • whose official or guardian's official native language is the language taught to the pupils as their native  language and
  • who studies in basic education in Tampere

Only applications submitted through the official application form are accepted for mother tongue studies.

There are two application periods each year:

Application form for available places is open in the Wilma system from the beginning of the school year until the end of February. During this period, new students are admitted to groups that have vacancies (fewer than 20 students). Applicants to full language groups are automatically placed on a waiting list once they submit their application. Students may be offered a place through the waiting list if vacancies arise during the school year.

Application form for the following school year is open in the Wilma system in April. During this application period, new groups may be established, and all students who meet the eligibility criteria can be admitted to mother tongue studies provided that at least 12 students are enrolled in the language group.

Students who are already participating in mother tongue studies do not need to apply again.
