In a subject-emphasis curriculum, the pupil will study through the basic classes stipulated by the national outline for the distribution of lesson hours, as well as a certain additional amount of the subject or subject group emphasized. A pupil may apply for subject-emphasis teaching during the second or the sixth grade. Aptitude tests will be organized for each subject-emphasis curriculum.
A pupil may apply for several subject-emphasis curricula, but can only be selected to one. For more information about subject emphases, see the school websites.

The Pispala and Wivi Lönn Schools will accept pupils for a music-emphasis class in alternating years.
The music-emphasis curriculum at the Tampere University Teacher Training School will primarily accept pupils from that school and secondarily from other schools if this is possible within the overall limit on third grade pupils at the school.
For all subject-emphasis curricula, applicants will be subjected to aptitude tests. Only pupils who exceed the allotted minimum score in the aptitude test can be accepted for the subject-emphasis curriculum. In all subject-emphases, the minimum score is 40 per cent of the maximum score possible in the aptitude test. The pupils will be selected for the curriculum in the order of their score. Apart from the aptitude test, the school may apply a complementary criterion of the pupil’s grade in their latest report card in the relevant subject(s) as determined by the school.
Teaching in the subject-emphasis curriculum will be provided only if a minimum number of pupils are accepted. The pupils undergoing a subject-emphasis curriculum need not necessarily be organized in a separate class, so the accepted pupils can be assigned to classes as the school sees fit.
