Temporary pedestrian and cycling bridge across Tammerkoski to open on Tuesday 7 July

A temporary pedestrian and cycling bridge across the Tammerkoski rapids, built as part of the Valssipadonraitti renewal, will open to traffic on Tuesday 7 July 2026. The piling work was completed before Midsummer, and the bridge deck, railings and lighting structures were finalised during last week.

75 metres long and 6 metres wide bridge for pedestrians and cyclists

The bridge connects Vanhankirjastonpuisto Park and Koskipuisto Park downstream from the Keskiputous power plant. The bridge is 6 metres wide and 75 metres long. The steel mesh railings are 1.2 metres high, and the deck surface uses the same crushed stone material as the park pathways in Koskipuisto and Vanhankirjastonpuisto. A small viewing platform has been built in the middle of the bridge.

The bridge forms part of a combined pedestrian and cycling route, which continues on the eastern side via the northern side of Laikku, through Vanhankirkonpuisto Park and Keskustori Square, to Puutarhakatu.

From the western end of the bridge, a separate route has been built through Koskipuisto Park to Rongankatu. This new route, particularly intended for cyclists, will also be maintained during the winter.

The Valssipadonraitti renovation is progressing on schedule

The temporary bridge will remain in place until 2028. It replaces the Valssipadonraitti route that runs via the Frenckell underpass and Patosilta bridge, which will remain closed for widening works until summer 2028.

The widening project is progressing according to schedule. Both existing bridges leading to the underpass, Pihasilta Bridge and Puutarhakanavasilta Bridge, have now been demolished, and work to widen and reinforce the Frenckell underpass is underway. According to the current estimate, the new bridges leading to the underpass will be completed in November 2026.
