Renovation of Puutarhakatu

Puutarhakatu will be renovated between the parks Vanhankirkonpuisto and Hämeenpuisto. The renovation started in March 2025 and continues until 2026. The renovation is being carried out because the water and sewer pipes have reached the end of their useful life and need to be replaced. District cooling pipes will also be built on the street.

After the renovation, the street will have a wider two-way cycle track on the northern edge, pavements on both sides and a one-way carriageway for motor vehicles. The renovation will improve walking and cycling conditions and road safety, and make the street a more pleasant environment. The management of stormwater, i.e. rainwater and meltwater, will also be improved.

Construction works in June-July

The carriageway of Puutarhakatu will be asphalted during the week starting 22 June 2026 on the section between Aleksis Kiven katu and Hämeenpuisto. The work concerns the carriageway only, and intersections will be completed separately at a later stage. The works will be carried out at night to minimise disruption to traffic.

On Puutarhakatu, the work will proceed in phases. Preparatory work for the asphalt layers will begin during daytime, and traffic will be routed via the cycle path on the north side of the street during the works. Milling of the carriageway will take place at the beginning of the week during night-time hours, and the actual paving will be carried out during the night between Thursday and Friday, 25–26 June.

The asphalting is part of wider resurfacing works in the city centre, which also include Aleksis Kiven katu and Satakunnankatu. On Aleksis Kiven katu, milling will also be carried out at the beginning of the week starting 22 June, mainly at night, and paving will take place during the same night of 25–26 June. On Satakunnankatu, milling will be carried out during the week starting 6 July at night, and resurfacing will continue later once the pedestrian crossing stoneworks have been completed.

Traffic lights on Aleksis Kiven katu are back in operation

At the intersection of Satakunnankatu and Aleksis Kiven katu, pedestrian crossing paving has progressed to the next phase and the traffic lights have been restored. The pedestrian crossing from Finlayson Gate directly to Aleksis Kiven katu has also been reopened for pedestrians and cyclists, who share the same crossing next to the work area. Temporary arrangements will continue until early July.

The aim is to renovate as much as possible in one go, in cooperation between the different actors, so as to cause as little inconvenience as possible and in as short a time as possible.

The renovation of the City Hall and the construction of a new building at the corner of Puutarhakatu and Aleksis Kiven katu are also underway. City Hall and its new building will be completed in spring 2026.
