How can harmful Himalayan balsam be distinguished from other balsam species? What should be done about Spanish slugs? And where should garden waste be disposed of? The lecture “At the summer cottage and in your own yard – how to deal with harmful invasive species?”, organised by the Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region, will address these questions and more at a lecture at Sampola on Monday, 11 May 2026, from 6:00 to 7:15 pm.
– The audience will receive practical and easy to use information on controlling invasive species – how to identify harmful invasive species and species worth preserving, which eradication methods are effective and safe, and in what types of sites control measures produce good results, says Enni Leppälä, project planner coordinator for the lecture.
The lecture is part of the Adult Education Centre’s Comprehensive Sustainability project, which aims to promote sustainable development across the organisation’s operations, from teaching to management.
– Controlling invasive species is essential from the perspective of safeguarding biodiversity, halting the loss of nature, and strengthening the vitality of native species, Leppälä explains.
The lecture on invasive species will be given by Essi Kupari, a nature management expert from the environmental association Villi vyöhyke (Luonnonsuojeluyhdistys Villi vyöhyke ry).
After the lecture, participants will be able to ask questions about challenges in their own gardens or along their favourite walking routes, so bringing a photograph is recommended. Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about summer volunteer work and excursion opportunities, as well as recipes using Himalayan balsam.
The lecture is open to everyone and free of charge, and no advance registration is required. The lecture will not be streamed and can only be attended in person. The lecture will be held in Finnish.
The Sampola Auditorium is located on the second floor of the building and is accessible by lift. Accessible seating is available in the auditorium.
The Adult Education Centre is organising the lecture in cooperation with the City of Tampere’s Climate Policy and Environmental Protection Unit. The Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region’s Comprehensive Sustainability project is funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education until 30 June 2027.
