Tampere received a valued A rating for its climate work, one of only 120 cities worldwide to do so. The international Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) organization assessed 738 cities around the world. Tampere made it onto the A list of the best cities for the third time.

The CDP's assessment of Tampere's actions is based on information reported on an open platform about climate change mitigation and adaptation actions and plans to reduce emissions. Cities that have received an A rating demonstrate leadership in climate action by publishing their data and actions to reduce climate emissions. Tampere's goal for 2026 is to reduce regional emissions by 64 percent compared to the reference year 1990.

In addition to Tampere, Turku also received the A rating in Finland this year. Ten cities in the Nordic countries received recognition, including Stockholm, Oslo, and Reykjavik.

Tampere continues to combine climate action with economic activity

Despite the global challenges of climate work, Tampere is committed to its strategy of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.
─ Cities that are doing ambitious work attract investment in their projects and present solutions that others can emulate, says Ilkka Porttikivi, Deputy Mayor of Tampere.

The Climate Neutral Tampere 2030 roadmap is the city's plan for mitigating and adapting to climate change. This year, the roadmap will be more closely linked to the allocation of resources for climate action in the climate budget.

─ We have recently focused on improving the financial planning of climate actions related to the Climate Neutral Tampere 2030 roadmap and ensuring that cost-effective climate actions receive sufficient resources. This is particularly important for achieving the city's carbon neutrality goal, says Hanna Meriläinen, project manager of the Climate-4-CAST project, which develops financial planning for climate work.

Tampere has already benefited financially from its ambitious climate work, as Kuntarahoitus has granted it a low-interest sustainable development budget loan.

Tampere is involved in the European Commission's 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities mission and the EU's climate change adaptation mission. Through CDP, Tampere reports its progress in these missions to the EU.

Climate work assessment based on transparency

The Carbon Disclosure Project is a global non-profit organization whose system allows companies, cities, regions, and countries around the world to publish their environmental data. CDP evaluates climate action practices on a scale from A to D.

In 2025, more than 23,100 companies, cities, states, and regions published their data through CDP. The organization considers information and its availability to be the basis for decisions that are positive for the planet. Financial institutions, which hold more than a quarter of the world's institutional assets, use CDP data as a basis for investment and credit decisions.
