Hatanpää Kartanopuisto Park and Arboretum receive the Green Flag Award once again
The award-winning green areas received recognition from the judges particularly for their high-quality maintenance, diverse vegetation, and functionality in promoting the well-being of the area’s users.
The number of green areas winning the award continued to grow from the previous year and is now the highest in the history of the Finnish Green Flag Award, as the program celebrates its 10th anniversary. The Green Flag Award is an international award programme that recognizes the quality of green area maintenance and management. It is administered internationally by the British environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, and in Finland by the Finnish Green Environment Association.
Hatanpää’s parks impressed the judges once again
Hatanpää Kartanopuisto Park and Arboretum are a familiar sight among Green Flag Award winners. The judges described the area as follows: “Ah, what a different world lies right next to the city centre of Tampere. The shady paths of Hatanpää Kartanopuisto Park and the splendor of the arboretum, along with the communal areas of K.J. Gauffin Park, make time stand still, and visitors find themselves wandering from one new surprise to the next. Those who doubt the importance of urban nature should come here to give the matter some serious thought. Maintenance is top-notch, and new developments are underway. Definitely a place worth visiting and worthy of the Green Flag Award.”
The park is managed by the City of Tampere’s Urban Environment and Infrastructure Services, and Tampereen Infra Oy is responsible for its maintenance.
Two first-time winners among the recipients – green areas that reapplied retained their certification
The Pietarsaari School Garden and Mäki-Matti Family Park in Jyväskylä won the Green Flag Award for the first time. The new green areas impressed the judges with, among other things, their professional maintenance as well as their diverse activities and green areas.
In addition to Hatanpää Kartanopuisto Park, the following sites renewed their certification from last year: the AhlmanEdu campus in Tampere, the Pirkkala Cemetery, the Kulosaari Cemetery, the Old and New Cemeteries in Vaasa, Fjällbo Park in Tuusula, Myllyranta Event Park in Lempäälä, Marketanpuisto Park in Espoo, Pikku-Vesijärvenpuisto Park in Lahti, Lepaa Campus Park, Naisvuori in Mikkeli, Kellonummi Cemetery in Espoo, Harju Campus Park in Ravijoki, Jokilaakso Tourist Garden in Lapua, Hupisaari City Park in Oulu, Riihimäki Butterfly Park, Snellman Park in Kuopio, and Mikkeli Park in Mikkeli. In addition, five parks in Kotka remain among the winners: Jokipuisto Park, Sapokka Water Garden, Fuksinpuisto Park, Sibeliuksenpuisto Park, and Katariinan Meripuisto Park.

High-quality Green Flag Award sites take a comprehensive approach to the needs of park users, the environment, and their operational strategy. Green areas that have won the Finnish Green Flag Award join an international network of over 2,400 green areas in 17 different countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Turkey, Belgium, Spain, and the United States.
