An expert panel coordinated applicants’ schedules and space requirements, enabling multiple operators to be placed in nearly all Meanwhile Use Spaces. In making the selections, the City of Tampere valued factors such as the suitability of the proposed concept for the space, time- and site-specificity, opportunities for artists and cultural professionals to work and earn income, local relevance, content appeal, commitment to equality and sustainability, and added value for residents (either in the space or indirectly through its use). Priority was also given to applicants who have not recently had access to a Meanwhile Use Space.
At Kaleva Hall, the selected operators include creators of plant and wood art, a framing workshop using recycled materials, and a meeting place combining culture, art, and activism. Kauppi Manor will host a diverse range of visual artists, including photographers and comic artists, as well as one dance artist. In Pyynikki Swimming Pool’s business premises number three, Kansankioski Romu & Random – already familiar to many city residents from Satamakatu – will open its doors. Activities in Romu & Random’s Meanwhile Use Space will include art exhibitions that change every few weeks, opening events, poetry evenings, reading circles, live music, a recycling point for books and clothes, and an occasional pop-up café.
– We once again received an impressive number of excellent applications, making the selection process challenging. Many strong applicants were left without a space this time, so we encourage everyone to apply again in future rounds, Head of Public Cultural Services Marianna Lehtinen says encouragingly.
Meanwhile Use Spaces are granted for working, creating and presenting artworks, implementing projects, organizing exhibitions, or other open and communal creative activities. When making selections, the City of Tampere values concepts that suit the space and its surroundings, are relevant to the present moment, and take into account the temporary nature of the activity. Spaces are provided free of charge to selected cultural and art operators. The space or its use must result in cultural activities for residents (e.g., workshops, exhibitions, events). Profit-making business activities are not permitted. However, the sale of artworks, tickets, related products, and refreshments is allowed if it supports the activities in the Meanwhile Use Space and the operator assumes full responsibility for all necessary permits, insurance, and safety.
