Näsisaari island
Page content in brief
The Näsisaari island has been an integral part of the Hiedanranta district master plans from the very beginning.
The waterfront residential blocks in the "Lake city" will be planned in more detail in the future.
At present, the island creates a path for both the tram and a new walking and cycling route along the waterfront. The area will be reserved for working purposes, including the removing of Nollakuitu -fibre waste from the lake.
Construction of Näsisaari
The City of Tampere was granted a permit for the construction of the Näsisaari island. The island was built in Lake Näsijärvi between the Vaitinaro junction and Pölkkylänniemi and is connected to the land by bridges. A channel was left between the island and the shore.
Construction started on 16 February 2022. The main works on Näsisaari were completed on 30 November 2022, about a month ahead of schedule, and continued after the sealing embankment subsided with the construction of the tramway. The tramway started running through Näsisaari in January 2025.
What's next?
The next measure in Näsisaari will be the deep sealing of existing fills where this has not yet been done. About half of the island's infill is now complete, allowing for a tram and walking and cycling routes run between the West and the city centre. The remainder of the filling will only be carried out once the necessary material is available.
Building of Näsisaari in brief
- Approximately 800 metres in length
- Final width of around 200 metres (currently around 100 metres filled)
- Channel width 36 m
- Amount of moved material
- Approximately 1 million cubic metres from Lielahti
- Approximately 200 000 cubic metres from Lahdesjärvi
Relocation of the Erkkilänsilta bridge
The Erkkilänsilta bridge, which was taken apart between Tammela and Juhannuskylä, has been taken to Näsisaari for storage with its blue arches. The aim is to build the bridge between Uittounneli tunnel and Näsisaari island as a new walkind and cycling route.
The lake city is developed in cooperation
The island will be completed by the City of Tampere and the tramway was built by the Tramway Alliance. Hiedanranta Development Ltd, owned by the city, is responsible for the construction of the district. The company will also build streets, parks and other areas and structures for public use. Once completed, these will be handed over to the city as a contractual payment.
