Finno-Ugric identity is based on linguistic kinship. The closest relatives of the Finnish language include Estonian, Karelian, and Sámi. Sugrifest, also known as the Finno-Ugric Kinfolk Day, has been celebrated in Tampere since 2014. The event showcases the cultures of peoples who speak Finno-Ugric languages. The main organizer is the Finland-Russia Society of Tampere, with support from local cultural associations and other partners.
“Tampere is proud to support Sugrifest by providing facilities at Culture House Laikku. The event enriches cultural diversity and promotes the continuity and visibility of the languages and traditions of small nations,” says Emma Peura, Coordinator at Tampere City’s Public Cultural Services.
On Saturday, October 4, from 10:00 to 17:00, Culture House Laikku will feature a wide array of Finno-Ugric languages and cultures. In the Music Hall, visitors can enjoy a full day of changing programs, including presentations on sauna culture, Ingria, the Vepsians, Hungarian minorities in Romania, and Estonian costume traditions. At the Finno-Ugric marketplace, you’ll find books, jewellery, clothing, accessories, and treats from different communities. The market stage will also host performances to accompany your shopping experience. One of the highlights of Sugrifest is the traditional costume parade, which gathers dozens of national costumes for a group photo each year. Everyone is welcome to join in their own attire – all kinds of costumes are appreciated!
This year, Sugrifest also offers language workshops. In these 30-minute crash courses, you’ll learn basic vocabulary such as greetings and numbers, and gain insight into what Finnish and its sister languages have in common.
