Moomin Museum gets a new Moomin mug in cooperation with Moomin Arabia: Moomintroll and The Groke meet in Winternight Glow

The Moomin Museum and Moomin Arabia have collaborated on a special Moomin mug. The mug’s theme is adapted from Tove Jansson’s original 1972 coloured book illustration. The mug depicts the story of the Moominland Midwinter novel, in which Moomintroll and The Groke encounter each other. The new mug launches on 26 September, the same day that the new Moomin Mug Mania exhibition opens to the public.

The new Winternight Glow mug creates a wintry pair with the summery Moominvalley mug, which Arabia released to honour the opening of the Moomin Museum in 2017. Both mugs feature an illustration based on an original gouache painting by Tove Jansson (1914–2001) held in the Moomin Museum’s collection. Visitors can see the original winter illustration at the Moomin Museum for one month, starting on 26 September.

The painting now decorating the Winternight Glow mug was commissioned from Tove Jansson for the cover of the French edition of the Moominland Midwinter novel published in 1972. Moomin Arabia’s in-house illustrator Parvati Pillai adapted Jansson’s original artwork to fit the shape of the Winternight Glow mug and slightly adjusted the colour saturation.

There’s no need to be afraid of The Groke after all – Moomintroll’s coming-of-age story

Published in 1957, Tove Jansson’s Moominland Midwinter (Trollwinter) is a novel about Moomintroll, who wakes up by himself in the middle of hibernation and experiences winter and its many wonders for the first time in his life. The book is a coming-of-age story in which Moomintroll must learn to cope on his own with all-new, even scary, things.

The Moomin Mug Mania exhibition opens at the Moomin Museum

Opening at the Moomin Museum’s Observatory on 26 September, the new temporary exhibition Moomin Mug Mania explores the journey of the Moomin mugs from everyday household objects to a cultural phenomenon. The exhibition delves into Moomin mugs as iconic and hugely popular collector’s items, examining the meanings and values associated with them. Moomin mugs are part of people’s everyday lives and celebrations; they symbolise the Moomins’ way of life and represent Finnishness abroad.

Arabia bases the themes of its Moomin mugs on Tove Jansson’s illustrations, and most of the original artworks featured on the mugs belong to the Moomin Museum’s extensive collection of Jansson’s art.

Winternight Glow available exclusively from the Moomin Museum for the first month

The Winternight Glow mug becomes available when the exhibition opens on 26 September at 9 a.m. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., illustrator Parvati Pillai will be at the museum signing mugs. The Moomin Museum will also sell the mug at a pop-up shop outside the museum, so visitors do not need an admission ticket to purchase it. For the first month, the mug will be available exclusively at the Moomin Museum. From 26 October onwards, the mug and the extended Winternight Glow collection will also be available through Moomin Arabia’s own channels and selected retailers. The Winternight Glow collection will be available as long as the stock lasts.
