Tampere is again the most prestigious city for students in Finland

According to a survey by Taloustutkimus Oy, Tampere has maintained its position as the most prestigious city for studying in Finland. Tampere is also in first place in the recommendation rankings.

The results are based on the Study Cities survey conducted by Taloustutkimus Oy in February-March 2025, targeting Finns aged under 30.

The willingness to recommend Tampere is influenced in particular by its good public transport system. In the last two years, the functionality of public transport has emerged as the most important reason for the willingness to recommend Tampere. 66 percent of respondents would recommend Tampere as a city for studying because of its public transport.

Almost as many respondents valued Tampere's location and reputation as a city to live in. The liveliness of the city centre also emerged as a significant factor in their preference for the city.

– We are proud and delighted with this news. Our task now is to maintain these results and to build Tampere into an even more attractive, attractive and attractive home for all students, says Mayor Kalervo Kummola.

A top city for several years

Tampere has been ranked first in the Student Cities survey for 10 years. The number of respondents who do not want to recommend Tampere has remained low over the years. Since 2021, when the overall ranking was included in the survey, Tampere has been ranked first in the overall ranking.

Tampere is home to around 50,000 people aged 20-29, the largest age group in the city. Most of them are students. The strategic goal of the City of Tampere and the Tampere higher education community is to be the number one student-friendly city in Finland, and a dedicated action plan has been developed to achieve this.

Keijo Hämäläinen, Rector of the University of Tampere, and Mika Hannula, Rector of Tampere University of Applied Sciences, say that there are many factors that influence students' well-being and their willingness to stay in the city after graduation, including not only quality education but also good cooperation between the city and the higher education community.

– The Tampere higher education community and the city of Tampere are working hard to build a student-friendly environment, and this is reflected in these results, says Keijo Hämäläinen.

According to Mika Hannula, the recent Taloustutkimus survey "Strongest Higher Education Brands 2025" also shows that Tampere's higher education institutions are significant attractors for the region.

– It is important to continue to improve student attraction and retention, and to listen to students' ideas and views, says Mika Hannula.
