What kind of park is it?

Sorsapuisto Park is one of Tampere's most prestigious and popular parks. On beautiful summer days, people gather in the park's wide green areas to enjoy the atmosphere with families, groups of friends or on their own. The park also offers activities for all ages and hosts the traditional Sorsapuisto Park Concert every summer, organised by the Tampere Philharmonic. Covering more than four hectares, Sorsapuisto is located in the city centre, next to Tampere House and bordered by Yliopistonkatu, Aaltosenkatu, Lähteenkatu, Salhojankatu and Viinikankatu. The park also has a summer kiosk during the summer.

The birds of Sorsapuisto Park

The summer birds of Sorsapuisto Park have delighted visitors for over 80 years. From May to autumn, the birds live in cages on the west side of Sorsalampi Pond. The birds of Sorsapuisto Park are mostly fowl.

Weather permitting, the birds remained in Sorsapuisto Park through the early autumn.

Plants and sculptures

Water lilies and wetland plants have been planted in Sorsalampi Pond. In the rest and recreation area next to the small pier, there are also flowering perennials. Along Yliopistonkatu, a cherry tree park has been planted, and small trees that bloom on the slope next to Viinikankatu. In recent years, Sorsalampi Pond has been treated with aluminium chloride in order to precipitate the eutrophying phosphorus. The park has many deciduous and coniferous trees, some of which are very old.

The park has three sculptures by Viktor Jansson, which are all lit up at night, and the park is also home to Väinö Rickhard Rautalin's sculpture 'The Dancing Girl'. The pond's fountain is also illuminated.

What does the park look like?

The story of the park

The name of the park comes from the duck pond, where the city began to introduce waterfowl such as ducks, geese and swans in 1939.

Duck Park was extensively renovated between 2010 and 2012, with the construction of a new playground and playing fields, new walkways and plantings, and a small pier built on the edge of the pond.

The Kaleva Sports Park is located on the other side of Viinikankatu, and offers a wide range of activities both in summer and winter.

Nice to know

There was also a zoo in Sorsapuisto between 1964 and 1972. The zoo had bears, foxes, monkeys, and lions named Tam and Pere. The city had received a surprise gift of two lion cubs from the Polish twin city of Lodz. However, the zoo was very cramped and no new home could be found, which was one of the main reasons why it was decided to close the zoo and the animals were sold or donated to various zoos around Europe.
