The oases at Pyynikintori and Hallituskatu are now complete

Until September, parking spaces will be used for people to relax instead of cars. The ideas are from young people in Tampere, and they participated in the execution, as well in painting events.
Rainbow-colored concrete benches, large plant pots with berry-themed paintings, and asphalt painted to look like a picnic blanket on Hallituskatu.
The name of the artwork on Hallituskatu is “Everyone’s Summer.” The oasis is located near Aleksis Kiven katu.

Colorful benches, plant pots, and flowers will adorn Pyynikintori Square and Hallituskatu until September 2026. The oases are intended to be pleasant places to relax in for all citizens. At the same time, they bring to life young people’s visions for the future of the city.

The paintings were created by Street Art Office Tampere and artist Veera Hanhiniemi. The furniture and plantings are provided by Tampere Infra. After the pilots, the furniture will be removed and the areas cleaned up.

You can provide feedback on the parking space experiments using the feedback forms at the end of this article. QR codes for the feedback forms can also be found on-site at the pilot locations. The feedback will be used to assess whether there is demand for similar projects in the future. In addition, residents’ views are being gathered to inform the future development of Hallituskatu and Pyynikintori.

The name of the artwork at Pyynikintori Square is “Tameless.” The oasis is located at the western end of the square.

The experiments are part of the Mobility Mindshift project. The project aims to inspire young people to move sustainably now and in the future, as well as to come up with ideas for new types of urban spaces using creative and playful methods. The Mobility Mindshift project is being implemented by the City of Tampere, Tredu, high schools, and the University of Tampere. The project is funded by the EU’s Horizon Europe program.

The Mobility Mindshift project aims to inspire upper secondary education students and young adults in Tampere to increase their use of sustainable transport. The project will involve young people in brainstorming sustainable mobility solutions through events and workshops, and increase interaction between city decision-makers and experts and young people. The Mobility Mindshift project is funded by the Horizon Europe funding programme. The project will run from 2024 to 2026.
