Germund Paaer’s painting returned to Hyhky school after conservation

A landscape painting by visual artist Germund Paaer (1881–1950) has been returned to Hyhky school following extensive conservation work. The large-scale painting, originally commissioned as a stage backdrop, belongs to the City of Tampere’s collection and was completed in the early 20th century. Paaer is known as the first chief designer of Kalevala jewelry, as well as a graphic artist and an enthusiast of ethnography.

The collections unit of the Tampere Art Museum took care of the conservation of the painting.

Paaer’s landscape painting was commissioned as a theatrical backdrop and, for decades, also served as the background for class photographs and as a decorative element in the classroom. The painting was displayed from 1903 to 1942 in Pispala, on the back wall of the only classroom of the so-called Sipilä small school. After the school ceased operations, the painting was transferred to Hyhky school, where it has remained for the past 80 years.

In 2020, the painting was moved to the Collection Centre for conservation. The work was given a new frame, tears were repaired, the canvas was straightened, and the painting was cleaned.
