Culture, theater, and community singing: Armas Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary

The national Armas Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary! This art and culture festival celebrating aging offers a diverse cultural programme in various locations around Tampere for two weeks, from March 17 to 31, 2026. Armas highlights older artists and uses art to bring themes related to aging to the forefront. Film director Aki Kaurismäki is the patron of the festival's anniversary year.

Free theater and music performances throughout Tampere

The Armas Festival's anniversary programme includes, among other things, Tampere Liikkuva Näyttämö theater company's Rautatie tour performances at Culture House Laikku on Saturday, March 21, at the Koilliskeskus library on Wednesday, March 25, and at the Peltolammi parish center on Saturday, March 28.

The Ritvalalaiset collective's touring theater will delight audiences with its performance of Emma ja Katariina. This is a rustic comedy with the aroma of freshly baked bread that takes the audience back to the world of the 1960s. The Ritvalalaiset collective will arrive with their new performance at Lielahti Manor on Wednesday, March 25, and at Culture House Laikku's Music Hall on Saturday, March 28.

On Sunday, March 22, Laikku's Music Hall will host the musical theater group Säihke and its comical musical Mysteeri parturissa (Mystery at the Barber's). The musical tells the story of the mysterious disappearance of Sorella Tuulonen, a barber approaching retirement age, which is investigated by private detective Raimo Rakki.

In addition to Laikku's traditional Thursday sing-alongs, Martti Kuurila and Jussi Tamminen will lead a sing-along at the Lielahti Library on Monday, March 23. Mansikkapaikka Community Center will present Riikka Puumalainen's moving dance piece Joku jonka tunsin (Someone I Knew) on Monday, March 30. The story deals with the themes of memory loss. In addition, the duo Jarmo Skön and Silja Kuoppala and Nina Åkerman will perform at various meeting places around the city.

Spring Bazaar and exhibitions at Culture House Laikku

On Saturday, March 21, the Spring Bazaar event will feature music and theater performances, a pop-up art and craft market, and exhibitions. The event will begin with Rautatie performance by Liikkuva Näyttämö.

Culture House Laikku will also open the More Alike Than Different photo exhibition, which documents the electrical cabinet art of South Hervanta. The streetscape of South Hervanta got a new look last October when eight electrical cabinets were transformed into works of art in a project by the Public Cultural Services. The works were created by artists with immigrant backgrounds. The opening of the photo exhibition will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Lobby Gallery.

Laikku is also hosting the Czech-Slovak group exhibition Echoes of Two Homelands, Andréa Vannucci's series of works in Garden of Possibilities, and the German Cultural Centre's art exhibition The Older, the Better.

Spring Carnival and jazz concert in Haihara

One of the highlights of the festival week is Haihara Art Centre's Spring Carnival on Friday, March 20, which will feature music, dancing, and a Filipino café. In the workshop, you can make your own carnival costume and show off your unique style and the story behind it in a playful fashion show.

The Armas Festival culminates on March 29 with the festival's closing concert at the Haihara Manor, where the
Ewa Kaarela Swing Band will celebrate its 30-year career. The concert will feature the best of jazz standards: swinging swing and touching ballads. Ewa, who was born in Poland, will be supported by a group of experienced professional musicians from the Tampere region in her skillful, emotional, and temperamental performance.

The Armas Festival offers a wealth of free events throughout Tampere. A warm welcome to all!
