Haihara's old herb garden to flourish as a community garden
A century-old herb garden dating back to the golden age of the manor has been brought back to life this summer with the help of gardeners and local residents. Previously weeded for reuse by the Kaukajärvi Marthas about ten years ago, the garden has since gone wild again. Last autumn's clearance work still found at least some myrtle and mint in the garden. At the Haihara Awakens! summer opening on 24 May, a wide variety of root vegetables, herbs and blackcurrants were planted in the garden together with the participants of the event. Already at the event, the new flowering of garden attracted a lot of enthusiastic feedback from planting enthusiasts and passers-by. Several of the local residents who came to plant the seedlings said they would be visiting the garden on their way past.
At the summer opening event, small farmers had the opportunity to plant pansies in the boxes attached to the garden pond and paint art on the edges of the boxes, as instructed by the Taidekaari. The boxes will be in Haihara until August and are made possible by the Neigbourhood Programme of the Kaukajärvi and Annala districts.
The water tank, watering can and compost bin next to the crops will be used by the irrigators. The hope is that the plantations will keep growing and blooming all summer long, so that there will be plenty of goodies for everyone to enjoy straight from the ground. Let's take care of the herb garden together.
The new flowering of herb garden is part of the development of Haihara and is the responsibility of the City of Tampere Public Cultural Services. The development has been carried out in cooperation with the Neighbourhood Programme.
