Urban Prosumers – Citizens as producers and consumers of sustainable solutions

The Urban prosumers project cartoon illustrates the complex interactions.
The goal of the Urban Prosumers project is to strengthen the role of higher education institutions as promoters of local sustainability solutions and to develop new theoretical insights into participatory climate action and how citizens can actively influence the creation of sustainable solutions at the local level.

Citizens produce and consume solutions for a sustainable lifestyle

Citizens can act as both producers and consumers in promoting sustainable solutions, services, and information. We work together with residents, communities, and businesses to find sustainable and community-based everyday solutions for transportation, energy, and food.

When people are involved in developing new ways of doing things, they are also more committed to them. We support promising ideas, including financially, and help create lasting, resident-driven models for climate action.

The URBAN PROSUMERS project makes particular use of citizen science and participatory research methods. The project’s goal is to strengthen the role of universities as promoters of local sustainability solutions, disseminators of knowledge, and facilitators of collaboration among stakeholders. In addition, the project will generate new theoretical understanding of participatory climate action and how citizens can actively influence the development of sustainable solutions at the local level. The model can also be applied in other EU Mission Cities in Finland and elsewhere in Europe.

URBAN PROSUMERS supports the implementation of the EU’s “Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities” mission in the Tampere region. The work is being carried out by a Tampere-based partner network comprising the City of Tampere, the University of Tampere, Tampere University of Applied Sciences, EcoFellows Ltd and MDI (part of the FCG Group).
