Hervanta Leisure Centre has two gyms intended for use by sports clubs and individual customers. The Leisure Centre is closed for renovation.

The Hervanta Library is located next to the busy DUO shopping centre. The library operates on the second floor of the building.

The route to the main entrance

The 3 accessible parking spaces are located outdoors over 10 m from the entrance. The width of the parking spaces is less than 3.6 m. Accessible parking spaces are located in front of the library building on the Insinöörinkatu side. Access to the parking spaces is from Insinöörinkatu. The pick-up and drop-off area is located in the vicinity of the entrance, giving easy access to the pavement. Drop-off traffic can drive close to the library entrance via the inner courtyard. Access to the courtyard is from Lindforsinkatu, between the buildings. The route to the entrance is smooth and sufficiently wide and illuminated. The main entrance to the library is located in the covered walkway between the library and the health center. The entrance can be accessed from Insinöörinkatu, Lindforsinkatu, and the pedestrian and bicycle path coming from the direction of the Leisure Centre.

The entrance stands out clearly and is illuminated. There is a canopy above the entrance. The doors connected to the entrance stand out clearly. Outside the door there is sufficient room for moving e.g. with a wheelchair. The door opens automatically with an opening button.

In the facility

The customer service point is located on floor 2. To open the accessible toilet, please contact customer service or the custodians, whose workstation is located just a few meters from the restroom. The toilet door does not have an elbow-operated switch. For moving around, there is a lift, which can hold a wheelchair; the door opens automatically. The floor numbers in the lift can be felt with fingers. The button for the exit floor stands out from the other buttons. (The minimum dimensions for an accessible lift are width 1.1 m and depth 1.4 m.) The doors in the customer service point stand out clearly. The waiting room of the customer service point has no queue number system. The waiting room has chairs. The customer service point has a toilet marked as accessible on the same floor. The toilet door cannot be easily opened and closed.

The sports facilities are located on floor -3. The swimming hall's changing and shower facilities can be accessed by elevator, but the pool area cannot be accessed by elevator. The service point has directions to the different facilities. The indoor walkways have at least 4 steps, with handrails on both sides. The facility has an accessible toilet on floor -2. The customer service/cashier's desk is located on floor -2. The customer service/cashier's desk can be found easily. The desk is accessible to customers standing only. The swimming hall's changing and shower facilities can be accessed by elevator, but the pool area cannot be accessed by elevator.

Dressing room, shower room and sauna

The dressing rooms are located on floor -2. The facility does not have an accessible dressing room. The men's/women's dressing rooms must be used instead. The door of the dressing room opens automatically with an opening button. The dressing room has sufficient room for a wheelchair and assistant. Good illumination and clear contrasts facilitate spatial perception. The numbering of the lockers is clearly legible. The shower room is connected to the men's/women's dressing room. The door of the shower room opens easily manually. The swimming hall's changing and shower facilities can be accessed by elevator, but the pool area cannot be accessed by elevator. The sauna is connected to the men's/women's dressing room. The door opens easily manually. The sauna has room for one wheelchair. The upper benches can be accessed through easily navigable stepswith handrails.

Sports facilities

The large/deep pool features accessible entry via gently-sloping steps. The steps have handrails on both sides. The swimming hall's changing and shower facilities can be accessed by elevator, but the pool area cannot be accessed by elevator. The children's pool does not feature accessible entry (steep steps or a pool ladder). A separate teaching pool is not available. Teaching is provided in various pools depending on the situation. An accessible toilet is not available in the pool area.

The door of the gym opens easily by hand. Unobstructed mobility with a wheelchair or other aids is not possible in the gym. Some of the equipment can be used from a wheelchair. The equipment is within everyone's reach (storage height 0.8-1.2 m). The gym features contrast differences between the floor and wall and between the floor and equipment. There is no glare in the gym.

What is South Tampere?

The districts of South Tampere

Annala, Hallila, Hatanpää, Hervanta, Hervantajärvi, Härmälä, Jokipohja, Kaukajärvi, Koivistonkylä, Korkinmäki, Lahdesjärvi, Lakalaiva, Lukonmäki, Multisilta, Muotiala, Nekala, Nirva, Peltolammi, Rantaperkiö, Rautaharkko, Rusko, Sarankulma, Taatala, Turtola, Veisu, Vihioja, Viiala, Viinikka, Vuores.

Kaukajärvi

Kaukajärvi is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Tampere, with settlements dating back to the 800s and 1200s. A cemetery has been found in the area. Kaukajärvi was Tampere's first suburb, with construction starting in the 1960s.

Viiala

The village is mentioned in 1540. In 1950-2000, the writer Kalle Päätalo and his family lived in a house he built himself in Viiala Kirvestie.

Hatanpää Manor

Founded in the 1690s. Kustaa III decided to found Tampere there in 1775 as a guest of the manor's owner Hans Henrik Boije, who sold his Tammerkoski Manor to the crown as part of the future city. The manor was transferred from the Idman family to the City of Tampere in 1913, when it covered an area of 1457 hectares. It included the present districts of Hatanpää, Viinikka, Nekala, Koivistonkylä, Rautaharkko, Härmälä, Lakalaiva, Multisilta, Peltolammi and Sarankulma.

Viinikka

Mentioned in the land register in 1540, Nekala also. A person called Per Neka lived in Nekala, hence the name.

Hervanta

Mentioned in documents as early as 1465. However, when the construction of the Hervanta megalopolis began in the 1970s, the area was forested hinterland. The area long had a troubled reputation (as did very many Finnish suburbs in the 1970s), but today it is one of Tampere's most desirable neighbourhoods. Construction of Hervanta began in 1973, responding to the increase in population caused by the migration of the 1960s. The aim was to make the district an independent subsidiary town with sufficient services, jobs and also educational institutions. The police school and the Tampere University of Technology were among the institutions to be located there. The architects Raili and Reima Pietilä designed the so-called central axis of Hervanta, which included a parish and leisure centre, a shopping centre and an activity centre. They were built in red brick, which, as well as being typical of the Pietilä's, tied Hervanta to the centre of Tampere.
