Southern Direction
The programme’s goals extend through the year 2060. Tampere’s strength has always been its ability to envision urban development projects far into the future, which is why the city’s growth toward the south is already being actively promoted. The development programme is characterized by an extremely broad network of stakeholders and a time horizon spanning several decades; as a result, interim goals and various phases are also being established for the programme.
Like other development programmes, The Southern Direction is implemented under the guidance of the City Board.
First: Southern Comprehensive Plan
The Comprehensive Plan prepares for a long-term transformation in which the marshalling yard area and its surroundings will evolve into a dense, green, and diverse urban district with smooth and efficient mobility. The phased plan ensures that this transformation proceeds in a controlled manner and provides guidance for future detailed planning. The area is bordered by Viinikanoja to the north and Lakalaiva to the south.
Other Urban Development Programmes
Other long-term urban development programmes in Tampere include the Five-Star City Centre and Hiedanranta. The urban development programmes are coordinated by the Strategic Project Development Unit within the Urban Environment and Infrastructure Services.
