The carbon footprint calculator included in the Tampere.Finland application encourages Tampere residents to be greener and more active in their daily lives. The calculator shows, for example, the most common mode of transport, the monthly carbon footprint of mobility and the level of activity. Every month, the users of the app can aim for the gold, silver or bronze levels of mobility. The calculator is free of charge.

By turning on the calculator and allowing the app to always track your location, the calculator automatically measures the emissions of mobility in the background.

Mobility activity calculator shows the climate emissions of ones actions.
The mobility carbon footprint calculator can be found in the Tampere.Finland application.

How to activate the carbon footprint calculator

1.    Download the Tampere.Finland application from your phone's app store.
2.    Click on the "Your mobility carbon footprint" icon.  Allow the app to always access your location.
3.    Keep your phone with you on the go and follow the carbon footprint of your mobility.

Trips appear on the calculator with a small delay. If no trips occur, check your phone’s power saving settings. If necessary, read the instructions.
The carbon footprint can be used to measure how much climate emissions are caused by different actions. The mobility carbon footprint calculator tracks the user’s mobility on a monthly basis and calculates an estimate of the carbon footprint.

Mobility activity calculator

The carbon footprint calculator also includes a daily activity calculator. It monitors the user's walking and cycling on a weekly and monthly basis and shows the health benefits of regular physical activity.

The health benefits are based on the amount of walking and cycling measured by the app in a week. By walking and cycling regularly, you can build up to the weekly recommendation of 2 hours and 30 minutes of light physical activity.

The calculator uses location data from your mobile phone

The calculator identifies the most common forms of travel and calculates an estimate of the carbon footprint. The calculator's analytics can usually identify walking, for example, but it may confuse roller skating or brisk running with cycling. The user can manually correct a misidentified travel mode for three days.

The calculator identifies the form of travel by utilising GPS, gyroscope and acceleration data. The Tampere.Finland app must be allowed to always track your location so that the calculator can work.

Better services for residents

The calculator provides the City of Tampere with valuable statistical information and understanding of where and how the residents move. This way, services can be developed to meet the needs of the residents. An individual user cannot be identified from the data.

The analysis and interface of the carbon footprint calculator has been implemented for the city by Kausal Oy and Codemen Oy. The source code of the calculator is licensed under an open source licence. The user interface has been implemented by Hion Digital Oy.

The mobility carbon footprint calculator has been developed as part of the STARDUST project, which has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No. 774094).
