Bring joy with a Christmas card – it is time for the annual Christmas Cards for Seniors campaign

The City of Tampere invites everyone to take part in the Christmas Cards for Seniors campaign to bring some Christmas cheer for the elderly. You can take part by making Christmas cards on your own, together with others or at a Christmas card workshop. Completed cards can be dropped off at collection points from 3 to 30 November 2026. The cards will be distributed in December to Tampere residents receiving home care or residential care services.

– A Christmas card is a small gesture that can mean a great deal to the person receiving it. A handwritten greeting shows that someone is thinking of them and wants to wish them a merry Christmas. Sending and receiving cards is an important Christmas tradition, particularly for many older people, says art instructor Assi Piironen.

The City of Tampere has participated in the nationwide Christmas Cards for Seniors campaign, coordinated by the volunteer organisation Siskot ja Simot, for several years. Last year, Tampere residents made more than 6,200 Christmas cards for older people. Each year, the cards are distributed before Christmas to the elderly receiving home care or residential care services.

Make cards on your own or together with others

Anyone can take part in the Christmas Cards for Seniors campaign. You can make a card at home at your own pace or get together to make cards with your family, friends, hobby group, school class or colleagues.

– It’s worth having a look through your cupboards and drawers to see what you can find. Odd paper napkins, small pieces of cotton wool, shiny sweet wrappers and other similar items can all make great materials for Christmas cards. Then just let your creativity take over! Piironen encourages.

– Remember to write your name on the card and mention the Siskot ja Simot Christmas card collection, Assi Piironen says.

Get creative at a Christmas card workshop

You can also make Christmas cards at free workshops open to everyone and held at various locations around the city in November.

Everyone who would like to make Christmas cards for seniors is welcome to attend. You can come on your own or with a friend. Children can take part with a parent.

– Come and make Christmas cards in your own style. You can follow simple templates or let your creativity run free. At the workshops, you can paint, do crafts, make collages and combine different materials, Assi Piironen says.

– I challenge everyone to join in and make some cards!

Take your finished cards to a collection point

You can take your finished Christmas cards to one of the collection points around the city. The collection points are open from 3 to 30 November 2026.

The cards will be distributed in December to older people in Tampere who receive home care or use housing services.

– Making cards is especially enjoyable with other people. Creating Christmas cheer for others makes you feel good too, says Assi Piironen, who runs the Christmas card workshops.
