Exercise Programs for Seniors

There are plenty of opportunities for seniors to get active, try new sports, and find a meaningful hobby. The fall program includes both new fitness trials and free exercise classes for seniors throughout the city.

Tampere offers a wide range of opportunities for seniors to stay active and discover new hobbies. Regular exercise helps maintain physical function, promotes well-being, and brings new social connections into daily life.

Getting Seniors Active

The “Getting Seniors Active” project brings together clubs, associations, and other organizations to make it easy for seniors to get active, regardless of their age or previous recreational background. This fall’s offerings include several low-barrier courses and exercise groups, such as Ballet 60+, HYROX Senior, Easy Dance Club, walking soccer, Mölkky, senior badminton, ice skating, and various gym, mobility, and balance groups. These groups offer the opportunity to try new forms of exercise safely and at your own pace.

The “Getting Seniors Active” project also offers instructor training for those who currently lead senior exercise programs or are interested in doing so. This free training provides evidence-based and practical skills for guiding physical activity for older adults. Organized in collaboration between the City of Tampere’s Sports Services and the UKK Institute, the training supports the project’s goals of promoting the well-being of seniors, functional capacity, and active daily life, as well as to strengthen expertise in instructing senior exercise.

Free Senior Exercise Classes

In addition, several free exercise classes for seniors will be held throughout the City of Tampere during the fall season from August 31 to December 13, 2026. Activities on offer include chair exercises, circuit training, fitness dancing, stretching, body maintenance, and groups focused on developing strength and balance. These activities will take place at locations such as neighborhood centers, service centers, parish halls, and fitness facilities throughout Tampere.

The exercise groups are suitable for both seniors who are just starting to exercise and those who are already active. A new hobby can support well-being, foster a sense of community, and bring joy to everyday life, while also strengthening functional ability for the years ahead.
