Application to the Sara Hildén Academy art school for children and young people is open until 31 May 2026

Applications to basic education in the arts at the Sara Hildén Academy art school of The Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region are open to children and young people born in 2012–2019. Applications can be submitted until 31 May 2026 using the form for the relevant age group. Basic education in visual arts develops skills in self-expression and visual work, while nurturing imagination and a sensitivity to nuance.

At the art school, children can already explore a wide range of image-making techniques at primary school age, from drawing and painting to ceramics, animation, photography, construction and printmaking.

Children born in 2019 can apply for first-year groups, while those born in 2017–2018 can apply for available places in second- and third-year groups. The purpose of the visual art samples attached to the application is to demonstrate the applicant’s motivation for engaging in visual arts. If there are more applicants than places, the Sara Hildén Academy will allocate student places by lottery.

Children and young people born in 2014–2016 can apply for available places in fourth- to sixth-year groups, and those born in 2012–2013 for available places in seventh- and eighth-year groups. Students are selected based on previous studies or visual art samples.

The technique used in the sample works is not important; what matters is that the works are created by the child or young person themselves.

According to Heidi Saramäki, Assistant Principal responsible for the Sara Hildén Academy, the most important thing is enthusiasm for creating and learning visual expression.

– At the art school, pupils can start exploring a wide range of image-making techniques already at primary school age: drawing, painting, ceramics, animation, photography, construction and printmaking. Basic education in visual arts typically comprises a curriculum of around 12 years, but study paths can vary in length, Saramäki explains.

Art school groups meet once a week on weekday evenings from Monday to Thursday. On the application form, applicants can indicate a preferred weekday for their hobby. The final group schedules will be confirmed by August, and where possible already in June.
