Nekala Library to open on 9 March

Nekala Library will open its doors on Monday, 9 March at 10 am. The library has renovated premises and more versatile opening hours than before.

Nekala Library is located in the new Nekala Cultural Centre (Lounaantie 2). The library has its own entrance at the Ahlmanintie end of the building. The library operated in the same premises until 2018, after which it moved to a temporary container building in the courtyard during the renovation of the former school building.

“The library is returning to familiar premises that have now been given a completely new look. Nekala Library is cosy and bright, and the more spacious facilities compared to the container library allow us to offer a wider range of materials, also for adults. At the same time, the opening hours are being renewed as we introduce staffed opening hours alongside self-service hours,” says Sylvia Stavén, Head of Southern District Library Services at Tampere City Library.

In addition to the library, the Nekala Cultural Centre is home to Nekalab, which rents workspace to creative professionals, as well as metal and ceramics workshops run by The Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region. Nekalab also operates a restaurant and event spaces in the cultural centre.

Opening week: Nekala LIVE and extended opening hours

Library services will be available as normal from the first day of opening. From 9 March onwards, Nekala Library can also be selected as a pick-up location for reservations. During the opening week, the library will have more staffed opening hours than usual. During self-service hours, there is no staff present at the library, but registered self-service users can enter the library using their library card and PIN code. Registration as a self-service user can be completed online or at the library’s customer service desk.

The opening of the Nekala Cultural Centre will be celebrated from 11 to 15 March with a programme suitable for all ages and free of charge. On Thursday, 12 March at 6 pm, the library will host a Nekala LIVE evening at the cultural centre’s restaurant, featuring versatile musician Timo Kämäräinen. The evening will begin with an interview and conclude with a live performance. The Nekala LIVE event can also be followed live on the Tampere City Library YouTube channel. The full programme for the opening week is available on Nekalab’s website.
