Printout samples of the competition entries will also be attached to the wider scale model of the city. You can view them during the commenting period from Friday 5 September, 4 p.m., in the window display of urban environment showroom Siluetti at the bus station (address Hatanpään valtatie 7).
The competition design teams were selected based on pre-announced selection criteria that were announced through the open registration procedure. A total of 36 companies or groups submitted applications to the competition by the deadline.
The competition preparatory group checked that the candidates meet the eligibility criteria based on the information they provided in their application documents and reviewed the approved applicants to select four working groups for the design competition. The selected participants are: HELT Architects Ltd, JKMM Arkkitehdit Oy, Arkkitehtitoimisto Harris ja Kjisik Oy and Huttunen-Lipasti Architects Ltd.
The City of Tampere and Senate Properties organise an invited architectural competition in cooperation with the Finnish Association of Architects SAFA. The Sori area design competition seeks urban planning solutions and ideas for the basis of local detailed planning in the area.
The competition complies with the Act on Public Procurement and Concession Contracts and the competition regulations of the Finnish Association of Architects, SAFA. The contract notice and the invitation to tender for the competition were published in the public procurement service HILMA.
Key location and services
Land use in the Sori area in the centre of Tampere will be developed and intensified based on the design competition in cooperation with the landowners in the area. The area is located in the south-eastern part of the city centre, with good transport connections and commercial services.
The area is bordered in the north by Vuolteenkatu, in the east by the railway area, as well as by the Kansi and Nokia Arena area, in the west by the Hatanpää highway and in the south by the Tampere highway. Sorinkatu runs through the area.
The aim is to form the Sori district into a high-quality and cosy centre area of housing, jobs and services, which also considers the needs of tourism and events. The area is strived to be developed into a pleasant and safe district with pedestrian-focused environment that is built in a high-quality and sustainable manner.
The aim is to have an area of high-quality city blocks, good pedestrian and green environment and new parks. The development goal is to make the public urban space and mobility environment more pleasant, green and walking-oriented. Another goal is to improve the area’s accessibility.
The city’s sustainability objectives and current built environment, its development and adaptation to cultural environment values must be taken into account in the design.
Competition and design progress
The competition entries will be assessed, and the competition will be resolved during autumn 2025, and the preparation of the local detailed plan will continue. The aim is to put the local detailed plan draft on display during 2026.
Based on the results of the competition, the City of Tampere will prepare the necessary changes to the area’s local detailed plan. Two changes to the local detailed plan are under preparation. The result of the competition will be used as a basis for further planning and changes to the local detailed plan.
