A national writing competition for third and fourth graders to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Moomin

Message in a Bottle from Adventure Island is a writing competition organised by Sanataideyhdistys Yöstäjä, a nonprofit organization for creative writing. It invites 3rd–4th graders in to write a letter about an exciting imaginary adventure. The competition runs from 9 August to 9 November 2025. The partners supporting the competition are the City of Tampere, Moomin Characters, the publishing company Tammi, and the WSOY Literature Foundation.

Create your own fictional character who sends a message in a bottle from an adventure island. What do you want to tell about the imaginary island? Who is the message for? For example, the message inside the bottle might be an invitation, an appeal for help, a journal entry, or the directions how to reach the island.

With these questions Yöstäjä, Tampere-based nonprofit organization for creative writing, encourages all 3rd–4th graders to participate in the national writing competition.

The inspiration comes from the first Moomin story, The Moomins and the Great Flood, published 80 years ago, where Sniff discovers a shimmering bottle in the water containing an important letter. Inspired by this story, Yöstäjä wants to encourage young writers to embark on their own literary adventure.

The competition runs from 9 August to 9 November 2025. The top three writers will be awarded cash prizes (€100 for first prize, €60 for second, and €40 for third). The best entries will be compiled in a book to be published by Yöstäjä at the end of the competition.

The competition rules and instructions for participation are available on Yöstäjä's website.

Please note that the information is provided in Finnish only, as the competition is conducted in Finnish.
