Register Now as a Self-Service Library Customer

Starting September 1st, only registered users will be able to use the self-service libraries of Tampere City Library. The aim of this change is to enhance the safety and comfort of the self-service libraries. Customers can already register as self-service users online or at the library's customer service.

Tampere has ten self-service libraries that customers can use outside of traditional service hours when there is no staff present. During self-service hours, the library doors open with a PIKI library card and its PIN code.

Until now, all PIKI library cardholders have been able to automatically use the self-service libraries. However, starting from September, only customers who have registered as self-service users and committed to following the self-service library rules will be able to utilize self-service hours. During service hours, the library can still be used without registration.

The new practice aims to reduce disturbances, improve the library's ability to address them, and increase the comfort of the libraries.

-    The self-service library is a popular and mostly well-functioning service that we want to continue offering to our customers. However, at times, self-service hours have had to be reduced due to inappropriate use of the facilities. We have had good experiences with self-service library user registration in the Helsinki metropolitan area, and we hope that clear rules and registration practices will also reduce disturbances here, says Library Service Manager Johanna Laakso from Tampere City Library.

Each customer logs into the self-service library with their own library card (except for children under 15 years old who come with an adult). Customers must ensure that no other individuals enter with them when they open the door and that the doors are always locked both when entering and leaving.

The use of substances, causing disturbances such as making noise, and threatening behavior towards others, either physically or verbally, are prohibited in the library. If a customer violates the library's rules or the Public Order Act during self-service hours, they may be banned from using the library for up to 30 days.

How to Register Online or at the library

Customers over the age of 15 with a PIKI library card can now conveniently register as self-service users online. One registration allows access to all self-service libraries of Tampere City Library. Customers must accept the self-service library rules during registration. The registration form can also be completed at Tampere City Library branches during customer service hours, provided the customer has their library card and a photo ID.

Customers under the age of 15 register as self-service library users with the consent of a guardian or other legal representative. Consent can be given online or at the library during customer service hours. The guardian is responsible for the use of the self-service library with the child's library card. In the future, children under the age of 15 can visit the self-service library independently if the guardian gives consent. Children under the age of 15 can also visit the self-service library accompanied by an adult.
