Self-service hours to be extended in Tampere libraries
Tampere libraries will switch to autumn opening hours on 1 September. During the autumn season, staffed service hours will remain the same as in the spring season, but self-service hours will be extended in all self-service libraries. In most libraries, self-service hours will be extended by one hour both in the morning and in the evening.
The number of loans and library visits at Tampere City Library has increased in recent years. Extended self-service hours will make it possible to use library spaces and collections more flexibly.
- Customers have asked for more opportunities to use the libraries, especially in the evenings. We can now respond to this wish, as the self-service library customer registration introduced last year has reduced disturbances in self-service libraries. Self-service hours vary between libraries, as they are affected by factors such as the library’s location, operating environment and the resources needed to maintain self-service library use. We therefore review library opening hours regularly, says Johanna Luukkonen, Manager of Library Services.
Self-service library use requires registration
There are currently 11 self-service libraries in Tampere, which can also be used outside traditional staffed service hours. Self-service library use is available at the Härmälä, Kaukajärvi, Koivistonkylä, Koukkuniemi, Kämmenniemi, Lielahti, Messukylä, Nekala, Peltolammi, Terälahti and Vuores libraries.
During self-service hours, staff are not present in the library, but customers can, for example, borrow and return items using the self-service machines, pick up reservations, use customer computers and the printer, read newspapers and magazines, or work in the library premises. The library door is opened with a PIKI library card and PIN code.
Tampere self-service libraries can be used during self-service hours by all customers who have registered as self-service library customers. Registration can be completed online or at the library customer service desk. Customers under the age of 15 can register as self-service library customers with the consent of a guardian or other legal representative.
