Obligation to collect biowaste from properties with 1-4 apartments

Obligation to sort and collect biowaste

In the biowaste obligation area, all residential properties (including holiday homes), must sort biowaste into a biowaste bin or composter.

The biowaste obligation area is defined in the waste management regulations. The biowaste obligation area covers parts of Tampere, Kangasala, Lempäälä, Nokia, Pirkkala and Ylöjärvi.

Check the map to see if this obligation applies to your property:

If a property has at least five apartments, biowaste sorting is required in the whole operation area.

Options for sorting biowaste

Biowaste collection

You can join the biowaste collection with your own biowaste bin or a shared bin with nearby properties. Waste management is organised by Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto.

Composting biowaste

You may also compost biowaste in your own composter or in a shared composter with nearby properties. A composting notification must be made to the waste management authority. In this case, the property is not required to join the biowaste collection.
