Guardians’ wish for schools to start later will be granted next autumn

Schools in Tampere will start next autumn on Wednesday 11 August 2027, which is a week later than this year. The Education Committee amended its previous decision on the work and holiday schedules for the 2027–2028 school year based on feedback received from guardians and a joint survey conducted across the Tampere City Region.

Guardians in Tampere, in particular, provided schools with a great deal of feedback regarding the start of the school year in August and the length of the Christmas holidays. In response to this feedback, the municipalities in the city region conducted a joint survey in August–September 2026 to ask guardians’ views. A total of 8,909 guardians from eight municipalities in the Tampere City Region responded to the survey. Of the respondents, 53% were in favour of the 2027–2028 school year starting on Wednesday 11 August 2027.

– We received a clear message from guardians that they would like schools to start later in August. We have taken note of this request, and starting school later will allow pupils to make the most of their summer holidays, says Anne-Mari Jussila, Deputy Mayor for Education and Cultural Services.

The autumn holiday is in week 42 and the winter holiday in week 9. The Christmas holidays run from 23 December 2027 to 9 January 2028. The school year ends on Saturday 3 June 2028, at the same time as elsewhere in Finland. The decision taken by the Education Committee at its meeting on 27 October 2026 supersedes the committee’s 2024 decision regarding the 2027–2028 school year. The municipalities in the Tampere City Region are working together to plan working and holiday periods. The aim is to achieve as consistent a regional solution as possible, one that supports families’ daily lives and the organisation of teaching.
