First account-based travel cards now in use – transition is progressing in stages

Nysse is now transitioning to an account-based payment system. The transition occurs automatically, and customers do not need to take any action. Travel cards will not be replaced.

In the new system, information about tickets and customer groups is stored in the back-end system instead of on the travel card. Going forward, customers will be able to manage their travel cards online in a more flexible way, reducing the need to contact customer service.

Here’s how the change will be implemented

The payment system will be updated in phases. During the transition period, some customers will use traditional travel cards, while others will use account-based travel cards.
In the first phase, all new travel cards sold will be account-based. Next, existing travel cards will be converted to account-based cards at ticket machines on public transportation. The change will be implemented in a controlled manner, starting with small numbers of cards.

Customers cannot influence the conversion schedule for their own travel cards. The change occurs automatically based on the card numbers.

You can check the status of your travel card on the Nella.fi online service. An account-based travel card appears in the service as a white card on a light blue background, marked with the letter “N.” If the card has not yet been converted, its image will show the familiar Tampere landscape featured on the travel card.

The new system makes it easier to manage your travel card

The account-based payment system improves the system’s reliability and makes it easier to use your travel card.

Tickets purchased through the Nella.fi online service are immediately available on your travel card, removing the previous two-hour delay. If a travel card is lost, the customer can close the card themselves and reactivate it later in Nella. The default zones for value tickets can also be changed without having to make a purchase.

This change does not affect ticket sales or purchase channels. The Nella.fi online service and resale points will operate as usual. In addition to the travel card, you can still use the Nysse Mobiili app, contactless payment, advance tickets and event tickets to pay for Nysse trips.
