Tampere city bikes surpass one million journeys
A significant milestone was reached in Tampere’s city bike service in September 2026. Since 2021, more than one million journeys have been made using the city bikes. The bike used for the millionth journey can now be identified by a special sign attached to its basket.
City bikes have become an established part of everyday life and travel in Tampere. Reaching one million journeys highlights both the popularity of the service and its role in supporting a wide range of trips, from commuting to work and study to leisure travel.
Usage has remained strong throughout this year. More than 50,000 journeys were made in August, making it the best month on record so far. During the current season, more than 240,000 journeys have already been made, indicating another strong season.
“Reaching one million journeys is a great achievement and shows that city bikes have become an important part of sustainable mobility in Tampere. The city bike service complements public transport and provides an easy way to travel, particularly on shorter journeys,” says public transport director Mika Periviita.
Over the years, the city bike service has been developed by expanding the station network and improving usability. The number of journeys made by city bike has increased year by year. The current Sale bikes will remain in service next year, during the 2027 season.
