Temporary bridge across Tammerkoski to be closed for the Tampere Festival of Lights opening event on 22–23 October

The temporary bridge constructed as part of the Valssipadonraitti renovation project will be temporarily closed on Thursday and Friday, 22–23 October 2026. The bridge will be unavailable due to preparations for and the implementation of the opening event of the Tampere Festival of Lights.

A temporary pedestrian and cycle bridge crossing Tammerkoski rapids was opened to the public in July 2026.

The temporary bridge will be used as part of the festival's opening programme on Friday, 23 October. Among other activities, the bridge will serve as a performance stage for chamber opera Her Voice and other programme content, and it will also be used for the event’s technical arrangements.

During the closure, pedestrians and cyclists will be directed across Tammerkoski via Hämeensilta and Satakunnansilta. Signage will be installed in the area to guide people along the routes designated under the temporary traffic arrangements.

The temporary bridge constructed as part of the Valssipadonraitti renovation project will return to normal pedestrian and cycling use following the opening event, starting on 24 October 2026.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure and thank you for your understanding.

Temporary bridge ensures access during the renovation

The main east-west cycling route, Valssipadonraitti, which begins at Rongankatu, crosses the Tammerkoski rapids and continues through the Frenckell building and across Frenckellinpuisto Park to Puutarhakatu. The route is being upgraded to accommodate increased traffic volumes and to meet the standards required of a regional cycling route.

As part of the renovation project, pedestrian and cycling paths as well as bridges are being widened and improved. The work began in summer 2026 and will continue until 2028. The aim is to create more space for walking and cycling while improving access to the nationally significant Tammerkoski landscape.

During the construction works, the original route is closed and the crossing over Tammerkoski has been arranged via a temporary bridge that was opened in July 2026. The bridge serves pedestrians and cyclists throughout the renovation period, apart from the short interruption required for the Tampere Festival of Lights opening event.
