New public lecture series on local defence, civil protection and everyday safety begins in Ylöjärvi on 21 September 2026

What kinds of threats can arise in normal and exceptional circumstances? How does cooperation between civil protection authorities work in practice? A new free public lecture series, Preparedness and Protection, will introduce participants to local defence, civil protection and everyday safety. The series begins at Leija Library in Ylöjärvi on 21 September 2026. All lectures will be held in Finnish.

The Adult Education Centre’s new Preparedness and Protection lecture series provides information on local defence, civil protection and everyday safety.

The series opens on Monday, 21 September 2026, from 5.00 pm to 6.30 pm with a lecture by the Pirkanmaa Regional Office of the Armoured Brigade on local defence. The presentation will examine the types of threats that may emerge during both normal conditions and times of crisis.

The second lecture, held on Monday, 28 September 2026, from 5.00 pm to 6.30 pm, focuses on civil protection and cooperation between public authorities. The speaker is Sami Lindfors, Fire Inspector at the Pirkanmaa Rescue Department.

The final lecture takes place on Monday, 5 October 2026, from 5.00 pm to 6.30 pm. Researcher Tarja Ojala will discuss how to build a safe and accident-free life, with particular emphasis on everyday safety and preparedness in both normal and disruptive situations.

According to Kristiina Kestinen, who coordinates public lectures at The Adult Education Centre of the Tampere Region, citizens should be prepared to cope independently for at least three days, or 72 hours.

– Without creating unnecessary fear, recent experience has shown that infectious diseases can spread widely, extreme weather events also affect our region, and the security environment requires increased vigilance. When we organise our lives so that we have sufficient food, water and warmth even in exceptional circumstances, we are better equipped to cope with disruptions that affect everyday life, Kestinen says.

The lecture series offers valuable information for all residents.

– The topics may be particularly useful for property managers, members of housing company boards, and people in responsible roles within homeowners’ associations and local communities, Kestinen notes.

The Preparedness and Protection lecture series is open to everyone and free of charge. No advance registration is required. The lectures can be attended in person at the multifunctional space of Leija Library in Ylöjärvi. The sessions will not be streamed or recorded.
