Accessible fishing piers planned for Eteläpuisto, Kaukajärvi and Suolijärvi

Discussions regarding construction are underway with local fishing cooperatives in the Kaukajärvi and Suolijärvi areas. Accessibility specialist Erkka Ikonen from EcoFellows Ltd is involved in the planning of accessible hiking trails and fishing piers.

– At least some of the piers will be built during this year. Accessible nature destinations are an important part of good urban planning. City of Tampere has done valuable work for many years to promote outdoor recreation and hiking opportunities, says Ikonen.

Fishing pier designed for safety and functionality

Both safety and usability are key considerations in the design of an accessible fishing pier. Handrails and edge barriers help users detect the edges of the structure and reduce the risk of falling. On the fishing side, the railing is lower to allow people to fish while seated, including from a wheelchair.

Access to the pier will be provided either directly from ground level or via a gently sloping ramp with a maximum gradient of eight percent. In addition to the pier designs, Ikonen is also exploring opportunities to introduce tactile maps.

– Tactile maps can be created for trails or harbour areas, for example. By feeling the map, users can form an understanding of the area and the location of its services and features.

At Eteläpuisto, the construction of an accessible fishing pier is facilitated by a nearby parking area and suitable terrain conditions. Accessible parking spaces can be designated in the area, and ramps can be built to ensure smooth access. According to Ikonen, it would also be beneficial to have an accessible toilet located close to the site.

Accessible sites benefit everyone

Ikonen has worked in accessible outdoor recreation for many years and has seen steady progress in accessibility. In his view, Tampere is among the leading cities in Finland when it comes to developing accessible nature experiences.

– Accessible trails and destinations benefit everyone. Features that make nature areas easier to use support people who experience challenges with mobility, balance, sensory functions or stamina. Ageing and moving around with young children can also create accessibility needs. Outdoor experiences can be made easier through facilities such as rest areas and routes with minimal elevation changes. However, it is not possible to make every trail and destination fully accessible.

In addition to planning, EcoFellows Ltd is primarily responsible for the construction of the accessible fishing piers.
