The excursion will start at 13:00 on Saturday, 28 February 2026 (during the school winter holiday) from Suolijärvi outdoor hut and take around three hours. Your guide will be Tuomas Lilleberg, an environmental biologist and biology teacher. The main language of the excursion will be Finnish, but English speakers are also welcome.
Winter conditions may be challenging, but animals and plants adapt to it in their different ways. During this excursion, we will explore traces and tracks left by animals and see how plants spend the winter. We will mostly follow a nature trail for a total distance of three kilometres but sometimes also walk through uneven terrain. This excursion is not accessible.
The walk will end at Suolioja campfire site, where the participants will gather around a fire to enjoy a packed lunch.
Bring warm clothes and a packed lunch
Make sure to wear something warm. The campfire site is often windy, and wearing layers will help keep you warm. Woolly socks, jumpers, thick gloves and winter boots will guarantee that you can enjoy yourself in wintry nature. Bring plenty to eat, a water bottle and a seat pad. A hot drink in a flask might be a good idea, too. Binoculars and magnifying glasses can also come in handy.
