Independence Day festivities will cause exceptions to traffic arrangements in the city center

Tampere will celebrate Finland's Independence Day on Saturday, December 6, with a varied program. The student torchlight procession starting from the Kalevankangas cemetery and the traditional Independence Day celebrations at Frenckell Square will cause exceptions to traffic arrangements in the city center.

Tampere will celebrate Finland's Independence Day with a public celebration open to all at Frenckell Square on 6 December 2025 from 5:00 pm to 5:35 pm. The celebration will feature the legendary band Yö and will be hosted by actor Matti Leino.

The Tampere Workers' Association Band, the Tampere Male Voice Choir, Tampere Female Voice Choir and the Pirkanpojat Boys' Choir. Choir will also perform on stage. Mayor Ilmari Nurminen will give the celebratory speech.
At the end of the celebration, the buildings in the Central Square area will be illuminated with magnificent Moomin light installations. The installations, based on Tove Jansson's original drawings, are from the book Moominland Midwinter (1957). The installations will enliven the atmosphere of the Christmas Market and bring the magic of winter to Central Square until 7 January 2026. The lights will be on daily from 4 pm to 10 pm.

Traffic arrangements

The parking spaces at Frenckell Square will be closed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on December 6. The bus stop Frenckell 0038 on Satakunnankatu will be closed all day. The nearest replacement stop is Finlayson 0072, located about 240 meters away in the direction of Amuri. On Independence Day public transport will operate according to the regular Saturday schedules.

Street Aleksis Kiven katu between Satakunnankatu and Puutarhakatu will be closed from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.  During this time, it will also not be possible to enter or exit the P-Frenckell parking. Access to properties on Central square and Aleksis Kiven katu will only be possible via Kauppakatu. Traffic on Kauppakatu will also be restricted to those visiting the properties. The taxi stand on Puutarhakatu will be closed on December 6 between 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Traffic control will be in place.

Student torchlight procession

The traditional Independence Day torchlight procession of Tampere students will depart from Kalevankangas Cemetery at 4 p.m. The torchlight procession route is Kalevankangas Cemetery – Hautausmaankatu – Kalevantie – Vuolteenkatu – Ratina Stadium – Laukonsilta – Aleksis Kiven katu – Frenckellin aukio. Temporary traffic stops are to be expected on the above-mentioned street sections.
